Hello, Γεια σας, Ciao, Salut, مرحبا, Hola!
We are Maria and Katerina. We come from Athens, Greece and this is also where we currently live.
Welcome to It’s all trip to me!
I (Maria) do most of the writing for the blog. Writing has been my passion ever since I was a child. I have always found it easier to express myself this way. It liberates me and relaxes me like nothing else can. The funniest part is that I don’t like to write in Greek, my mother tongue, but in English. I fell in love with the English language at the age of 8 and our romance was only getting started when I decided to study English Language & Literature at the University. After many years as an English and Greek teacher, I decided it was high time I focused on what I am most passionate about: writing. So, here I am! Although not able to kiss my day job goodbye YET, all my love (and free time) go out to this baby blog.
Katerina is our photographer (and Pinterest guru if I may add). She sees our best travel moments through her camera lens and captures them to eternity. A civil engineer by profession, she looks beyond her CAD drawings and knows how to appreciate beautiful architecture when she sees it. Equally fond of stunning landscapes, she found her life’s passion in photography quite recently. Ever since then, she regularly attends photography classes and she often loses track of time when she happily plays with her lenses and other gadgets I am totally ignorant about. By the way, whenever you stumble upon a super crappy photo or three in the blog, you should know that they’re mine. We’ll get rid of those at some point, I promise.
Our passions for writing and photography are nothing compared to our love of travel, though. We both suffer from a serious case of wanderlust. This has been evident to both of us since childhood when even a short drive to a nearby beach would mean the world to us. However, although I had already been to many places in Greece, I only started travelling abroad in my late 20s. On the contrary, Katerina had seen a lot of places in Europe during her University years but hadn’t travelled in Greece that much.
Another love we share is learning foreign languages. Apart from Greek, we also speak English, Italian, a bit of French and we also started learning Arabic (but life, or better, the blog got in the way and there is no time for Arabic at this point. Or any other language for that matter). I also speak Spanish. We firmly believe that learning a foreign language is the next best thing to travelling. It broadens one’s horizons and helps the mind wander to unknown lands and diverse cultures.
During our early travels, both Katerina and I were just tourists. Still trying to find our bearings, we were unable to fully appreciate and enjoy the destinations we visited. When we started to travel together though, all this began to change. Inevitably, we became better travellers with every trip we took. We soon realised that we had found the perfect travel companion in each other. We like the same things and we share this insatiable passion to see and taste all the beauties the world has to offer. Now we know that travel helps us evolve as personalities and become better people.
As far as our travel style is concerned, we do everything we can to keep it immersive and sustainable. Everywhere we travel, we try to shop, eat and drink local and to immerse ourselves in the local culture as much as possible. Otherwise, we feel as if we never visited the destination in the first place. We also do our best to accomplish slow travel. That’s actually not easy to combine with part-time travel, but we’re getting there. Last but not least, our travels are generally budget conscious but we do allow ourselves a little splurge every now and then. Especially when it comes to experiences which are unique to the destinations we visit. We’d hate to miss out on those and then live to regret it.
The idea of starting a travel blog had been on our minds for quite some time. This way we would combine our passions for writing, photography and travel in the most exciting way possible. However, we were sceptical about how on earth we could possibly compete with all those fascinating travel blogs out there, whose creators managed to quit their jobs and travel full-time. And then it hit us: we didn’t have to. If we can fit our wanderlust into our 9-5 job routines then there must be a lot of others in a similar position who want to do the same.
So why not start a travel blog to inspire fellow part-time travellers to see the world one trip at a time exactly the way we do? That was how It’s all trip to me came to life. Katerina came up with our name by making a brilliant pun on the famous It’s all Greek to me idiom. It’s all trip to me seems so appropriate since we are both Greek and we love trips!
Blogging is a whole new world for us. The ongoing learning process that comes with it is simply amazing. We literally learn something new every single day. Not to mention how exciting it is to discover that we have skills we never knew we had. It goes without saying that our travel blog takes up most of our free time. To be honest, it’s kind of a bumpy road. Sometimes disappointments, frustration even, gets the better of us.
However, we absolutely love our journey to the travel blogging world. It makes us happy in ways we couldn’t possibly imagine before. For instance, we absolutely cherish the fact that through the blog we get to meet like-minded people from all over the world whom we now call friends. And we know for sure that the best is yet to come!
