The time of the year you decide to visit the Greek Islands can make or break your experience.

As a rule of thumb, avoid travelling to the Greek Islands in the peak season, namely July and August, and the off-season, roughly between late November and early March.

However, the high, low, and shoulder seasons vary from island to island, depending on each island’s popularity and size.

For instance, major cities in some bigger islands, like Crete, are perfectly fine to visit even in the dead of winter, as long as you’re not interested in beach weather.

Smaller islands, though, are off-limits during the low season, as most tourist facilities, such as hotels and restaurants, are only open from April to October.

Santorini

We’re pretty sure you didn’t expect to see Santorini in this category. After all, Santorini is famous for its epic caldera views, blue-domed churches and cave hotels.

However, Santorini is home to one of the most fascinating ancient sites in Greece.

Often referred to as the Pompeii of the Aegean Sea, Akrotiri was a Bronze Age city buried under tons of ash from a massive volcanic eruption around 1600 BC.

Centuries later, archaeological excavations brought to light a remarkably preserved settlement.

Rhodes

The largest of the Dodecanese Islands, Rhodes is a slice of heaven on earth for medieval history lovers.

The island’s Old Town is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval settlements in Europe, whispering tales of the Knights of Saint John at every turn.

Amorgos

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions the Greek Islands? If it’s whitewashed towns glistening under the bright sun, you’re not alone.

Although Greece has six main island groups, pretty much everyone, including Greeks themselves, will think of the architecture of one island group in particular: the Cyclades.

The charmingly minimalist architecture of the Cyclades is only one of several architectural styles that you’ll see across the Greek Islands. Admittedly, though, it’s the most quintessentially Greek among them.

Each of the Cycladic Islands has a dazzlingly white Chora, its main town. Although you can’t go wrong with any gorgeous Chora, we’ve singled out the two we think are the prettiest among them.

Folegandros

Folegandros Island competes with Amorgos for the prettiest Chora in the Cyclades. The core of its whitewashed medieval settlement is a completely car-free zone, offering a sense of sweet seclusion and utter peace.

Patmos

Patmos is one of the most spiritual places to visit in Greece. It’s believed that St. John wrote the Book of Revelation there, and this is why it was declared a Holy Island in 1981.

In Patmos, you can visit the Cave of the Apocalypse, where St. John lived when he received his visions and heard God’s voice.

You can also step inside the castle-like Monastery of St. John, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dominates the island’s breathtaking Chora.

Yet, the biggest draw of Serifos is its 72 pristine beaches, a remarkable number given the island’s compact size.

Most beaches in Serifos are sandy and easy to reach on foot or by car, while others are secluded and accessible only by boat.
